Why it matters
If the van has to park 50 metres down the road, every box and every piece of furniture has to be carried that far. On a full house move that can add an hour or more. Parking outside the door is the single easiest way to save time and money.
Parking bay suspensions in London
Most London boroughs let you apply online to suspend one or more resident or pay-and-display bays for the day of your move. A few things to know:
- Apply early. Councils usually need anywhere from a few working days to two weeks’ notice.
- Book enough space. A Luton van needs about two standard bays.
- Check the signs go up. The council puts up notices before the day. Take a photo of them.
- Red routes are different. These are managed by Transport for London, not your council, and loading rules vary by location.
Search for your borough’s name plus “parking suspension” to find the right page.
Manchester and Greater Manchester
In central Manchester and the busier parts of Salford, Stockport and Trafford, the council can suspend on-street bays or issue a dispensation for loading. On most residential streets in the suburbs, parking is easier, but tell us if there are yellow lines or permit zones.
Visitor permits
In permit zones, a visitor permit from a neighbour or the council can be enough for a smaller van. Check the permit covers commercial vehicles and the full length of time we’ll be there.
Apartments and new-builds
Many blocks have a loading bay and a goods lift that must be booked through the concierge or building management. Book both for the whole move window, and ask whether the building needs our insurance certificate. We can send it over in advance.
If you can’t get a space
Tell us when you book. We’ll plan the crew size and timing around a longer carry so there are no surprises on the day. Parking fees and suspension costs are paid by the customer.
