Moving Day Guide: What to Expect

A simple plan for the day itself, from the night before to the first cup of tea in your new kitchen.

The night before

  • Pack your essentials bag and first-night box, and keep them out of the way so they don’t get loaded.
  • Strip the beds and put the bedding in a labelled bag.
  • Make sure the fridge freezer is defrosted and dry.
  • Check the parking suspension signs are up, if you booked one.

When the crew arrives

The crew leader will walk round with you first. This is the time to point out anything fragile, anything that isn’t coming, and anything that needs special care. Tell them about tricky access at the new place too.

Keep a clear path from the front door, and keep children and pets somewhere quiet and safe. It’s safer for everyone and makes the loading quicker.

While we load

  • Stay available for questions, but you don’t need to carry anything.
  • Do a final sweep of each room once it’s empty: cupboards, the loft, the garden, behind doors.
  • Take meter readings and photos of each room before you hand over the keys.

At your new home

Get there before the van if you can, so you can open up and check the parking. Stand by the front door and tell the crew which room each item goes in. They’ll rebuild beds and wardrobes first so you have somewhere to sleep.

Before the crew leaves, walk round together and check everything has arrived and nothing has been left in the van.

Useful to have on the day

  • Phone and charger
  • Keys for both properties
  • Kettle, mugs, tea, milk and snacks
  • Toilet roll, soap and a hand towel
  • A small tool kit, bin bags and a torch
